I’m Lush. I build software companies to fund a lab. The lab is for bioelectricity: how cells use it to solve problems, and whether bodies are interfaces to something we haven’t mapped yet.

I always loved the outdoors. Especially summers in Norway.

The lab is the thing I’m certain about. Somewhere in the last few years biology started to look different: not a genome executing a program, but cells and tissues solving problems, navigating spaces, running on bioelectric signals nobody was paying attention to. The people working on this call it diverse intelligence. Michael Levin’s group is the clearest entry point. I read it and it felt like the thing I’d been circling my whole life without a name for it. I want to work on it. Practically, because this is how a lot of disease gets solved. And because I can’t not.

Science was always the journey and the destination. To have curiosity be the thing you do with your life. It took me nearly twenty years to see that. A lot of time alone, thinking, stripping away everything excess and superfluous in who I thought I was. And then finding the one idea that made all that searching mean something: Levin’s work, and plenty of others’, on bioelectricity and the many forms a mind can take. Mind-boggling research, and exactly the kind I was meant to do. To be on the side of Copernicus. The rebel in the crowd, going against the current. The aim is clear: have a small hand in solving disease with this new paradigm, and maybe along the way understand something about life and the universe. To actually live out the dream of uncovering the greatest secrets there are.

Now

I’m building software products. Hour and Codelitics are a few of them.

On the biology side I’m still in the research phase. Building a company is a full-time thing, so right now it’s papers, talks, and a folder of half-designed experiments. I write about what I’m learning here as I go. The essays are the honest record of how far along I am.

Where this goes

A farm, close enough to a city with real talent in it that I can be in a room with the right people by lunch. Mild climate all year, if such a place exists. Summers in Scandinavia. A lab on the property. I wake up, I go to the lab, I work on this. Everything I’m doing now is a route to that.
